We’re excited to let you know that the next Heart of the Continent Partnership (HOCP) general meeting is scheduled for February 24-25 in the Eveleth, Minnesota area. We’ll continue our pattern of a Thursday evening session open to the wider public, followed by a Friday meeting wrapping up by 3:00 p.m. (preliminary agenda below).

Thursday evening lecture

Location: Iron Range Resources Conference Room; 4261 Hwy 53 S Eveleth, MN 55734

This time, we’ll begin with a brief panel discussion, featuring Jim Sanders of the Superior National Forest and Mary Somnis (or another staff person) from Iron Range Resources among others, followed by dialog addressing the topic: The local community economies and public lands; how do they connect? What are the possibilities and efforts you’re involved with or would like to see that connect gateway community economies to public lands in a win/win way?

Community Congress Update: We’ll will begin with updates on HOCP’s International Community Congress set for October 24-27, 2011. We’ll also have new information on how to form a community team from your area.

Mapping session: We’ll spend the bulk of the Friday general meeting working together on a mapping exercise that will help us all, individually and together, to make action plans for our communities. We’ll begin with the question: “How can community leaders make a plan where community economic development and healthy public lands work together?” To get new insights on this ongoing conundrum, we’ll work through a systems mapping exercise, guided by leaders from the University of Minnesota.
