Here’s your chance to paddle in a dragon boat. The Heart of the Continent Partnership is entering this summer’s Dragon Boat Race in Grand Marias, Minnesota. And we need paddlers!
What? The annual Grand Marais Dragon Boat races are fun, for a good cause (actually three of them), and are an opportunity to enjoy Grand Marais. The event raises money for the Grand Marais clinic, WTIP nonprofit radio, and the North House Folk School. For more information, visit: www.northshoredragonboat.com.
Why? It is a fantastic opportunity to spread the word about Heart of the Continent while paddling with others, mingling with the hundreds of people who attend this event, and networking with WTIP, which does live broadcasting of the races and festivities. It will also be a great way to get to know others who care about the region and may want to learn more about HOCP.
Schedule:
Friday July 30: afternoon practice 3:00-4:30 p.m. (mandatory)
Friday July 30: evening parade of teams and opening ceremony (optional)
Saturday, July 31: Race Day. 10 a.m. — 5:30 p.m. (several heats throughout the day)
Overnight? On Friday night, HOCP has reserved a group campsite at the Grand Marais Rec Park, near downtown G.M. (218-387-1712). Cost is $5 per person (and bring your own tent, of course). For other lodging options, see the registration info at www.heartofthecontinent.org
Cost: $50 per person event fee
T-shirt: 30 new HOCP t-shirts with our new bunchberry logo on the front and color map on the back will be available to paddlers first-come, first-serve for $30. All paddlers should also bringa plain white T-shirt.
We will need 25 paddlers
• 20 paddlers for each race: we’ll shoot for 25 to have a few to rotate in and out.
• Gender balance: need a minimum of 8 women of the 20 paddlers for each race.
• 14 and over: minimum paddling age is 14
• Waiver: participants will have to sign a waiver to paddle.
