For those on the design team, this is a full day of planning for the Heart of the Continent’s Balancing Nature & Commerce summit/workshop. Facilitated by Kris Hoellen, Director, Conservation Leadership Network, The Conservation Fund, Shepherdstown, WV.
Public Lecture: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Climate Change: What’s the Future for Our Northern Forests and Communities?

Dr. Peter Reich, Regents Professor, Department of Forest Resources, University of Minnesota will discuss his work on the Boreal Forest Resilience Project. The question is how the forests and people of the “northland” might be affected by current climate change. Dr. Reich will talk about key ecological issues today and in the future. The focus will then turn towards human communities, and how their future and that of the natural areas are interlinked. More questions will be raised than answers given. Lecture flyer »
Public Conversation: Balancing nature and commerce in communities that neighbor public lands

Join other community members and the planning team of the sustainable gateway community initiative to share ideas about balancing nature and commerce in communities that neighbor public lands. Paul Danicic, Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, and Lisa Radosevich Craig, Superior National Forest will host and facilitate this informal discussion to generate thoughts and feedback from organizations and individuals interested in how sustainable public lands and community economies can thrive side by side.

- 9:00 am – 10:45 Ongoing Science in the Heart of the Continent. Presentations from researchers, and conversation on opportunities for collaboration among organizations and regions on these and other projects, and how science research and local communities connect. Topics might include:
